Three people who will never doubt the importance of being in the right place at the right time are the music composer trioShankar Mahadevan,Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonca. The Amar Akbar Anthony of Bollywood music,as they are fondly called, discovered each other, and in turn,Bollywood discovered them. Twelve years and several path-breaking films later, they are still the buddies they used to be. Ehsaan, who was offered the film Dus by Mukul Anand, suggested that we compose the films music together. It was just a casual thing and it still is, smiles Mahadevan.
Seated at their favourite hangoutPurple Haze Studios in Bandrathey discuss the music of their upcoming releases London Dreams and Wake Up Sid which continue to generate rave reviews. Both films are very different. Wake Up Sid is earthy and urbane, while London Dreams is set against a huge canvas of Indian rock, says Noorani. Do they fear comparisons between London Dreams and Rock On!!,since both movies address the same subject? Not at all. They are poles apart, says Mendonca, adding,London Dreams songs like Mann ko ati bhavey and Yaaron barson are very desi, while Rock On!! is Western music with Hindi lyrics.
While Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are probably the first trio of music composers to entertain audiences with their chart-topping music, they are very different in their individual ways. Mendonca is loquacious,Noorani a silent observer and Mahadevan a thinker. We are starkly different and this has kept us together for years, says Mahadevan. But familiarity does breed contempt. Arguments are inevitable. We just had one today, says Mendonca. We have had varied musical influences and,so,each one of us has individual views on music. But we dont take ourselves seriously. This helps, confirms Noorani, adding,Earlier,we had specific roles to play in terms of programming, finance and packaging. But now,we partake in everything.
The musicianswho continue the Bollywood tradition of partnerships between music composers contributing and pooling their individual strengthsrevolutionised Bollywood music with Dil Chahta Hai. Mahadevan nonchalantly says,We just did what we wanted to do. There was no baggage attached and we did not want to prove a point. But now its a different story. There is tremendous pressure. Each time the credits of a movie read our names,we know we are expected to come out with something drastically different.
With an overload of films in their kitty, their non-film career has taken a backseat for a while. But we will definitely bring out our non-film album this year, says Mahadevan, looking at the other two. They nod in unison.
