The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested three men for allegedly posing as its officers and robbing a person of Rs 5 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 22.17 lakh in August. One of the three accused is the nephew of the victim — Mohammad Shaikh (48).

The accused, identified as Akbar Khan (36) alais Gaibul Hassan,Abdul Shaikh (34) and Salman Khan (22),all residents of Malad (East),were arrested around 11.20 pm on Friday.

“Mohammad has a hotel in Kalina and resides in Malad (East). His son Saidul was getting abusive text messages since May,allegedly from one Gaibul Hassan. He did not know who he was. Mohammad had recently sold land in his native village and that is how he had the cash and jewellery. This was known to his nephew Salman who decided to rob his uncle,” said a Crime Branch officer.

The officer said six persons entered Mohammad’s house on August 23 and identified themselves as Crime Branch officers. “They did not reveal their names. They began searching the house and found the valuables in the cupboard. They told Mohammad that the goods were unaccounted for and that they were seizing it. While leaving, they told him that his phones were tapped and that they would give him a mobile phone on which he would receive further instructions,” said the officer.

The next day,a person gave Mohammad a mobile phone on which he received a call from the same people. However, they did not tell him anything except that they would call him again.

On October 10,Mohammad’s son got a call from Gaibul Hassan. It was then that he realised that something was amiss. He consulted his friends and they advised him to lodge a police complaint. A complaint was registered at Dindoshi police station.

Crime Branch officers received a tip-off that the accused would be in Malad on Friday. A trap was laid and they were arrested.
