While speculation on Stephen Fry and Dev Benegal making a movie on Srinivasa Ramanujan continues,Cinemorphic Entertainment Company production’s The Man Who Knew Infinity, the biopic on the mathematician’s life, seems more real. Names of its stars have started doing the rounds, and the latest is Jeremy Irons, the man most known for his Oscar-winning role in Reversal of Fortune.

Irons will play GH Hardy, the British mathematician who took Ramanujan from obscurity in Edwardian India and installed him in the halls of Cambridge University. He will star alongside Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame, who is playing the titular. Patel has worked with Irons before in Reversalof Fortune.

The interest in Ramanujan’s life stems from the fact that Chennai-born,who contributed hugely to mathematics, specially the infinite series, had almost no formal training in the subject. Iron’s is a crucial role as Hardy was his mentor in Cambridge, where Ramanujan stayed until his illness. He died soon after his return to Chennai at the age of 32. The film on his life was announced at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. While the script is locked, the casting and pre-production for the film is underway.
