Indra Bahadur Khatri (28): Has no past criminal record in India. A native of Nepal,he was a Maoist 10 years ago and even received training in handling weapons,the police said. A search of Khatri’s wallet yielded a photo of his wife and child.

Sayyed Bilal Mustafa Ali (29): Might have some cases against him. Bilal is a resident of Mumbra and worked at a cutlery store in Crawford Market. He allegedly received the contract killing job over the phone. Arrested with two pistols and two mobile phones,Bilal is married and has a son.

How they did it

On Tuesday,the duo left Mumbra at 2.30 pm for Navi Mumbai. At Vashi bus stop,they boarded a bus and reached Mankhurd railway station from where they bought tickets for Sandhurst Road by local train. From there,they hired a taxi and reached the spot near J J Marg at 5 pm.

The police said the two loitered in the locality for over four hours,waiting for their target to arrive.

At 9.30 pm,they spotted him and fired six rounds at him. The two then ran for 20 minutes before they were apprehended by locals. “Bilal fired five rounds in spite of no training. Khatri could only fire one round after which his weapon got stuck,” said senior police inspector Samsherkhan Pathan.

four bullets were recovered from Khatri’s pocket along with four in the pistol. Bilal’s pistol was empty. The police also recovered Rs 13,000 and 60 Nepalese rupees from Khatri and Rs 5,000 from Bilal. Three cellphones were also recovered.
