The Canvas Diaries

NGMA to screen films on Akbar Padamsee and MF Husain this week.

For four years, Parisian filmmaker Laurent Bregeat followed the Modern greats — Akbar Padamsee, SH Raza, MF Husain and Ram Kumar — capturing their every move on camera as they painted their iconic works, discussed their lives, and modern and contemporary art. The footage was turned into four films on the lives of these artists. Two of these, Works and Words (2010), on Padamsee, and The Barefoot Pilgrim (2010), about Husain, will be screened at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Fort, on Thursday evening.

Bregeat, who has worked as an Assistant Director on films such as The Da Vinci Code, shot the films with the intention of making archives for future generations. The films will be screened alongside an exhibition showcasing works by veteran photographer Kulwant Roy. “We always find that the response to documentaries and films is immense when we screen films along with an exhibition,” says Shivaprasad M Khened, Director NGMA. “Apart from making history in modern art, these artists led interesting lives. These films show the people behind the artists, often caught in candid moments,” he adds. The screenings will be attended by Padamsee.
