Which actress of the 1970s have you emulated for your character in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai?
I play a successful film actress,a diva Rehanna Sultan who is romantically involved with a smuggler, played by Ajay Devgn. My character isn’t modelled on a particular actress but draws elements in terms of the styling and behaviour. This is what excited me about the film.

What about the styling was so exciting?
Women in the ’70s were more curvaceous, feminine and vulnerable. Be it the polka-dotted dresses, the flared trousers, the saris with very short blouses or the deep cut gowns, the clothes made the women look elegant. They sported scarves in so many ways including the way men wore them. Women really experimented with styles and no one ever bothered them.

Today’s times are the opposite—everyone is waiting to criticise you if you attempt something different.

The styling of which actress of that era do you find the finest?
I find Zeenat Aman’s style in the ’70s the trendiest. She represented the wild child and flower power concepts which were popular then. And given that,in those days, films didn’t have stylists but costume makers who provided the outfits, her taste was impeccable. Her dresses were stylish and feminine. She also had the panache to pull it all off.

Which of your many glam looks in the film is your favourite?
I am seen dressed in a bouffant and sari,in mini-skirts and short dresses,in flared trousers with printed shirts and big collars. In a scene that precedes my romantic song with Ajay Devgn,I am wearing a peach sari with crystal work on it. It’s the most elegant outfit I wear in the film.

Are the ’70s making a comeback?
The ’70s keep making a comeback. I’d say that there is some element or another of the ’70s’ style that is in vogue at all times. Even now, whether it is the trend of the big,Jackie-O sunglasses or the structured jackets that are in fashion, they originally belong to the ’70s.

Do you like to experiment with your styling?
Being in the eye of so many people does not give me the freedom to experiment as I would like to. The moment any actress attempts something, people jump at the opportunity to pass judgment and worse still, criticise. If I had my way,I would probably be seen attempting drastic styling like Lady Gaga does.

What would you rather stock your wardrobe with—classic items or current trends?
I keep up with the trends for the young. You’ll see me sport the latest,be it puffed sleeves or balloon dresses. I don’t attempt very edgy stuff though. Recently, however,I’ve started to invest in classic items of jewellery.

Do you have a penchant for vintage garments?
I would love to buy vintage garments but they are extremely high-maintenance and very expensive. I don’t have my papa’s or boyfriend’s money to blow up,I have to spend my hard-earned money wisely. Mumbai is a congested city with small houses. I don’t even have the space to stock vintage clothes. Besides, given my profession,I can’t be seen wearing the same article of clothing twice. Vintage garments would go waste if I buy them.
