After recording elevated temperatures last week amid the Cyclone Michaung, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday said that Mumbai is slated to experience a dip in the temperatures in the upcoming two-three days.

According to senior IMD scientists, the city could witness minimum temperatures dropping below 20 degrees Celsius.

Sunil Kamble, Director of IMD Mumbai, told The Indian Express, “We are expecting northerly winds to arrive in the city and therefore, the temperatures will drop in the next 2 – 3 days. However, the minimum temperature also depends on how strong the northerly winds are as well as the impact of the western disturbances.”

Meanwhile, Kamble said that several parts of eastern Maharashtra are slated to receive light showers over the course of the next couple of days.

“While the cyclone has already weakened, its impact will be felt in eastern parts of Maharashtra which will receive light rain. However, the Konkan region is unlikely to be impacted,” he said, adding that Mumbai as well as its neighbouring districts will not experience any rainfall.

Even as the city is slated to experience some respite in the heat, meteorologists maintained that the drop in temperature will not be very significant.

Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services said that the city can expect a bigger drop following December 14. Palawat told The Indian Express, “With the northerly winds blowing in, Mumbai will witness lowered temperatures.

However, the temperature may only drop by one or two degrees. This is because the western disturbances have not set in. Until there is heavy rainfall in the northern parts of the country, the drop won’t be significant. However, we are expecting heavy snowfall in some regions between December 14 and 15, following which the temperatures will drop further in Mumbai.”

Winter sets in the megapolis typically after December 15, with the minimum temperature dipping below 20 degrees Celsius

Last week, on November 30 , the mercury levels dipped below 20 degrees Celsius for the first time this season, indicating the arrival of winters in the city.

However, with the Cyclone Michaung brewing in the Bay of Bengal, meteorologists had forecast that the temperatures were likely to soar in the city and suburbs, owing to increased heat and humidity.

On Wednesday, the IMD’s recording station in Santacruz recorded a temperature of 23.3 degrees, marking a departure of three degrees above normal whereas the coastal observatory located at Colaba registered a minimum temperature of 24.2 degrees, which is two degrees above the norm.
