The Crime Branch has picked at least six suspects from various parts of the city for questioning in connection with last Wednesday’s murder of key Chhota Rajan aide Farid Tanasha, sources said.

They said officers zeroed in on the suspects over the weekend, and are currently questioning them at a suburban unit’s office. The sources were, however, unwilling to name the suspects or their gangland affiliations and loyalties,if any.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy,too, was unwilling to comment on details of the probe. “I am not in a position to say anything about the case since that could hamper our investigations. However, our men are working on the job and we are giving it top priority,” he said.

Around 9:40 p.m on Wednesday,Tanasha was gunned down by two men at his Tilak Nagar home, when he was with his wife and their three-year-old daughter at the time. The police said the two shooters were part of a group of six to eight, still unidentified, who had gone to the building.

Officers involved in the probe had hinted that they suspect the hand of fugitive gangster Bharat Nepali. They drew parallels between Tanasha’s murder and that of advocate Shahid Azmi, who had been representing Fahim Ansari in the 26/11 case. Azmi’s murder in February was allegedly carried out on orders from Nepali. The weapons used in both murders were 7.65mm pistols.

Tanasha had been arrested in 2005 along with Rajan aide Vicky Malhotra. Shortly after his release,he was spotted with Rajan aides D K Rao and Sunil Poddar at a party organised by another alleged Rajan aide,Paulson Joseph,at the Chembur Gymkhana last yea. Five Mumbai Police officers including a DCP were suspended for attending the party.
