The Mumbai police have booked Asit Modi, the producer of the popular television series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, on charges of molesting an actress who used to act in the serial. Besides Modi, executive producer Jatin Bajaj and his associate operational head Sohail Ramani have also been booked.
A senior police officer confirmed the development to The Indian Express and said that the police will soon summon the accused to record their statements.
The police said that the FIR was registered on Monday night based on the complaint of an actress, who alleged that she was molested and sexually harassed by the accused during the shooting of the serial at Goregaon Film City and in Singapore.
The police recorded the statement of the actress and booked Modi, Bajaj and Ramani under sections 354 (molestation) and 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code on Monday night.
The actress had recently levelled sexual harassment charges against the accused but Modi had refuted the allegations and had said that he would take legal action against her.
Police sources have said that on March 7, the actress wanted to go home early and requested the producer but she was allegedly insulted and threatened to stay on set.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been running on television since 2008. However, many actors have left the show on a bitter note. Actor Shailesh Lodha, who portrays Taarak Mehta, has also taken legal action against the makers of the show for unpaid dues.
