An man accused in a case of assault, who was arrested by the Versova police on Tuesday, died while in their custody on Wednesday morning. A probe has been ordered.
According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as Gotiram Shivare, a resident of Andheri.
“We arrested Shivare after we received a complaint from the Versova village area that he had got into a fight with two people after consuming alcohol. He was under the influence of alcohol when we brought him to the police station. He insisted on lodging a complaint against the two people he had fought with. Accordingly, we registered cross-complaints. After completing all inquiries, we took him to the lock-up at the Andheri police station. It was there that he complained of stomach pains around 1:30 am on Wednesday,” said Senior Police Inspector Arundhati Rane, Versova police station.
Police said Shivare was taken to Cooper Hospital first and then to the Bhabha Hospital. He was being brought back to the police station around 8:30 am Wednesday when he collapsed. He was rushed back to the Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead around 9 am.
Rane added that Shivare had no fixed address and was infamous in the Versova village for getting violent and quarrelsome while under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, Mumbai police’s Crime Branch has initiated an inquiry into the incident. As per protocol, any case of custodial death is investigated by an independent agency to ensure it’s free and fair.
“The Crime Branch has already begun their probe into the incident. They will soon be getting reports of Shivare’s post mortem examination, which will help determine the cause of death. Further action in the matter will be decided based on the results of the inquiry,” said DCP (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni, who is also the Mumbai police’s spokesperson.
