The primary runway at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) was closed for air traffic at 6.35 pm on Friday owing to strong tailwinds. Aircraft were told to take different flight paths.
A spokesperson for the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said the secondary runway of the airport was used.
We have to switch runways when tailwinds are strong. All flights were told to take different paths while we prepared the secondary runway. Once it was opened, flights were directed to land on the secondary runway. They landed normally, he said.
The primary runway was operational again from 9.30 pm. The tailwinds had ceased by then, the spokesperson added.
The change in runways caused delays in flight schedules. There were reports that some flights were more than 45 minutes behind schedule on Friday evening after runways were switched. However, the MIAL spokesperson said there were no major delays.
When a runway has to be switched, aircraft are directed to take another flight path as the next runway has to be prepared. Sometimes, this results in delays. However, flights were not running much behind schedule, he said.
