The cancellation and delays started after a SpiceJet flight skidded off the main runway on Monday night. Airport authorities said in a tweet that the secondary runway was being used on Tuesday and it may take up to 48 hours to make the main runway completely operational again.
According to CSIA spokesperson, both the main runway and the secondary runway will remain closed on the said days due to recarpeting work going on at their intersection. However, the airport will operate the whole day on March 21.
On Thursday, Prabhu tweeted: “Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is now Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Congratulations to the people of Maharashtra, the long pending demand is now fulfilled.”
The Maharashtra government on December 8 decided to insert the word 'Maharaj' to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as it felt the Maratha warrior king deserved to be paid more respect.
According to officials from the Air Traffic Control (ATC), the flight hovered at Mumbai airport for close to an hour. The subsequent flight IR 811, supposed to fly back to Tehran, was delayed by almost 12 hours.
