State undecided on land acquired by Mukesh Ambani for SEZ in Raigad

The state government will take a decision regarding the land acquired by the Reliance group headed by Mukesh Ambani for an SEZ in Raigad even as the company has been asked to approach the Centre to reapply for the SEZ.

The state government will take a decision regarding the land acquired by the Reliance group headed by Mukesh Ambani for an SEZ in Raigad even as the company has been asked to approach the Centre to reapply for the SEZ.

Speaking in the Legislative Council,Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the government will take a policy decision regarding the fate of land acquired from farmers in Raigad for the Mahamumbai SEZ by the Reliance. The company had directly acquired 1,505 hectare land from farmers in the region for the SEZ,but the remaining land could not be acquired in the stipulated time. The SEZ was subsequently cancelled.

The Minister of State for Revenue Prakash Solanke said the government had acquired some land for the SEZ,the land records of which were recently reverted to the farmers.

Pawar said that Reliance had acquired land under MIDC laws for the SEZ. He said the government will have to take a policy decision regarding the land in view of the cancellation of the SEZ.

“We will take up this matter before the Cabinet and take a decision. We will also have to hold talks with the concerned company as they had acquired the land,” said Pawar, adding,“We are supportive of farmers in the state and the decision will be favourable to them.”

Meanwhile,Solanke said the SEZ was cancelled in November 2009. The Maharashtra government has since asked the company to reapply for the SEZ,but has not received any application from them.
