State opposes parole to 1993 blasts convict

Tarani,whose death sentence passed by the trial court was in March commuted to life term by the Supreme Court,wanted to be released on parole to attend his daughter’s wedding on June 2.

Additional public prosecutor Anuradha Mane opposed Tarani’s plea arguing he did not go through the usual channels like jail and police officials after which the competent authority would have sought a report to recommend or cancel the plea. She added that since the wedding would have been planned much in advance,Tarani had enough time to approach the authority concerned.

A vacation bench of Justices A H Joshi and M L Tahaliyani,however,asked the state government to treat Tarani’s parole application like an application for bail and decide it by May 27.

The trial court had in 2006 convicted Tarani for planting an RDX-laden bag at Hotel Centaur in Juhu which injured three.

CBI said Tarani had attended a conspiracy meeting in Mumbai where absconding accused Tiger Memon,co-accused Javed Chikna and accused-turned-approver in the case,Mohammed Usman Jan Khan,had hatched the conspiracy. This year,the Supreme Court reduced Tarani’s punishment from death sentence to life term.
