There’S nothing Rajini can’t do. And this, the veteran South filmstar Rajinikanth proved on Sunday by bringing together some of the biggest names in Bollywood to launch the promo of his daughter Soundarya R Ashwin’s directorial debut, Kochadaiiyaan. The animation film with motion capture in 3D, has the superstar playing three lead characters.
While Rajinikanth’s old-time friend Amitabh Bachchan was the guest of honour at the event held at a suburban multiplex, other attendees included director Shekhar Kapur, R Balki, Govind Nihalani and Ramesh Sippy and actors Kajol and Anupam Kher, among others.
At the film’s Chennai launch earlier this month, the superstar had especially flown down Shah Rukh Khan. The 63-year-old Rajinikanth was at the event without make-up in a plain striped shirt and trousers.
Bachchan spoke of his friendship of many years with the South superstar, saying Rajinikanth is “like family” to him. “It is unbelievable the way he reinvents himself. He has something new to offer to moviegoers.
I would like to say that when the history of Indian cinema is written, it will be remembered as the time before Kochadaiiyaan and after Kochadaiiyaan,” he said. Other directors praised Soundarya’s work and the quality of the animation.
However, the one face missing in this star-studded crowd was that of the film’s leading lady, Deepika Padukone who couldn’t make it due to prior commitments. But she was hardly missed as the spotlight was constantly on Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Rajinikanth’s heroine from his last film, Robot. The actor attended the event under the ever-watchful eye of her protective mother-in-law.
