Bomber jackets with zardozi, tie-dye track pants and leather-laced sweatshirts walked the ramp, as sportswear took a fun turn on Day 3 of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014. While designers dealt with subjects as diverse as traditional crafts and Oriental chic, there was no denying that the collections were sprinkled with a healthy dose of activewear-inspired seasoning. Here’s our pick of favourites:

Metal Works: To say that Ragini Ahuja of Ikai loves her sheep nappa leather would be an understatement. After surprising us by pairing leather accents with tie-dye last season, Ahuja threw some brass strips into the mix this time around and called the collection “Metal”. A strong androgynous mood pervaded the line as oversized bomber jackets, boyfriend shirts, muscle tank dresses and sweatshirts in relaxed fits walked the ramp. We especially loved the varsity vibe of the metallic M and XL emblazoned on the jackets and the flatform sandals the models sported, stamped with words such as “fierce” and “brave” on them.

Game Time: The explosion of colours, prints and textures that was Gaga in Tanya Sharma’s collection, screamed sportswear from the round-neck collars of the zardozi embroidered t-shirts down to the bandhani track pants and the high-top Nike sneakers the models wore. The juxtaposition of jersey, silk and satin and the surfeit of technique — tie-dye, block-printing and leheriya, along with the glint of zardozi — threatened to overwhelm at times. But as separates, Sharma’s line-up of sporty shapes with desi design elements worked.

Hand Some: After their honeycomb pattern play for Summer/Resort 2014, Shikha Grover and Vinita Adhikari of Ilk took two simple paper human figure cutouts holding hands and turned them into their collection and mission statement for the fall. The collection, called “Holding Hands”, saw the motifs transferred onto hems, borders and sleeves in the form of prints and fine embroidery. The nearly austere cuts and drapes, in indigo, grey and white, were rescued from death by dullness by an energetic dash of sporty accents. Turned cuff shorts, skirts with elasticated bottoms and zippered bomber jackets with saris added a youthful touch.

Oriental Touch: Teresa Laisom and Utsav Pradhan’s label Munkee See Munkee Doo presented a line titled “An Asian Living in Europe”, which was as innovative in concept as it was in name. Japanese ingenuity met European elegance, as obi belts accessorised finely embroidered tops, and pleated mesh inserts and zippers adorned shirt dresses, thereby adding a sporty twist to the nuanced looks. We see, and we like.
