With a view to beef up security under their area, the Thane Police Department, has invited tenders from private suppliers for state-of-the-art CCTV surveillance cameras to be installed at certain public places.

As per the plans of the Thane Police Commissionerate, the places narrowed down for electronic surveillance in Thane will be covered by integrated IP-based video surveillance system with state-of-the-art facility for monitoring the video relay at police stations at the divisional and zonal level besides a centralised location. The Thane Police is specifically looking for cameras which would operate both during day and at night.

Commissioner of Thane Police,Anil Dhere, said,“The CCTV cameras will be used to monitor crowded public places and also entry and exit points under the Thane police’s jurisdiction. Besides a centralised location, the video will also be monitored at the level of the respective police station, divisional and zonal level.”

As per Dhere,a team of the Thane police has surveyed the areas under its jurisdiction and has narrowed down on certain public places where they feel that electronic surveillance is needed to monitor the place effectively. “We have narrowed down on 40 such locations and shall be monitoring them on a 24/7 basis in order to tighten security and maintain law and order more effectively,” said Dhere. When asked about the number of cameras the police have in mind Dhere said,“Once the tenders come in,we shall be studying the specifications and range of the cameras and also the size of the area to be covered and depending on that a decision shall be taken on the number of cameras needed to cover those 40 spots which have been narrowed down by us for electronic surveillance.”

The move to install surveillance cameras forms a part of the Mega City Policing plans, which the then DG AN Roy had promised to give priority to after the Ahmedabad terror e-mail was discovered to have been sent from a flat in Sanpada,Navi Mumbai. The Mega City Policing plan entails providing greater technological resources for communications, transport and surveillance.
