In view of crimes against women increasing in the state,the Maharashtra government has decided to start special police stations to cater exclusively to complaints of crime against women.
These police stations will have all-woman staff. They would come up in each city and district of the state in the next two months.
The decision was taken on Friday,following a meeting between Minister of State for Home Nitin Raut and members of the state Womens Commission,activist Teesta Setalvad and other prominent women from the state. Each police commissionerate and district superintendent will open one police station with all-woman staff to cater to complaints of crimes against women. Each such police station will have an inspector,four sub-inspectors and 30 constabulary staff. The DCP of the zone and DSP will be responsible for the working of the police station.
We have enough staff to begin these police stations. The budgetary allocation will be made by the government. These police stations will have a legal advisor and other support also, said Raut. The police will also start a toll-free number for complaints by women.
