The Railways will soon introduce paperless tickets for Mumbaites, following reviews of a trial project currently under way in Chennai. The next step could be a trial run of paperless tickets for commuters on Mumbai’s local suburban trains, said officials.

The Unreserved Ticketing System’s (UTS) mobile ticketing application was launched by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on December 27, 2014 in Chennai and Mumbai.

The application has been developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and allows a passenger to book a ticket through the mobile phone and then print it out on the automated ticket vending machines or ATVMs at the originating station.

Last week, the Railway Minister reviewed the ongoing trial in Chennai where commuters need not take a printout of the tickets.

“After launching the UTS mobile ticketing application, the commuter had to still take a physical copy (print out ) from any ATVM. It was noticed that the application, although very useful, was failing in getting connected to commuters. In the last week, we took a review in Chennai on the current trials wherein a physical copy is not required. In fact, it is easier for both the commuters as well as for the ticket checkers,” said Prabhu.
