Soon, illegal slums under Bandra skywalk to be razed

Illegal hutments taller than 14 ft below the skywalk between Bandra east railway station and Kalanagar will be demolished soon.

Illegal hutments taller than 14 ft below the skywalk between Bandra east railway station and Kalanagar will be demolished soon. The decision was taken following Mayor Shraddha Jadhav’s visit to the area on Wednesday.

The MMRDA,who built the skywalk, has been repeatedly asking the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to demolish the hundred odd illegal housings below the city’s first ever skywalk that was opened for public use in June 2008.

“Illegal hutments as tall as 30 ft having four floors above the ground have come up in the area. We have identified around 35 families who have an official letter from the district collector and are eligible for rehabilitation,” said Jadhav.

The demolition will be carried out by civic official along with police protection. The residents of Garib Nagar in Bandra east Behrampada started nestling under the skywalk after a major fire gutted about 300 shanties in the area in August last year.

The BMC had washed its hand off the demolition stating that the road had not been handed over to the BMC yet.

However, following the mayor’s visit,a notice of eviction has been sent to those staying in the hutments.
