I know what it is to stare in the eyes of death, says police constable Arun Jadhav, who narrowly escaped death, while his companions ATS chief Hemant Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and additional commissioner of police Ashok Kamte were killed in the Mumbai attacks . Jadhav (41),who has served 22 years in the police department, resumed work at the Crime Branch today six months after the attack.
Jadhav, along with Karkare,Salaskar,Kamte and three other police constables, was heading for Rang Bhavan when Kasab and Abu Ismail attacked them. Jadhav was the lone survivor. He was lying below the other bodies in the police vehicle driven away by Kasab and Ismail. They took him to be dead as well. He used a wireless set to inform officials about the attack as soon as the two gunmen abandoned the vehicle when it sustained a flat tyre near Vidhan Bhavan,Nariman Point.
Jadhav, who sustained two bullet injuries in his right arm,was at the Bombay Hospital for nearly a month. He is yet to recover completely. But staying at home has only brought back the deadly memories. Not a single day has passed without recalling the night when Kasabs onslaught killed six best officers before my eyes, Jadhav said.
Jadhav, who had a very close alliance with Salaskar and had worked for around 13 years with him, said he missed his boss. He was a born leader. He could delegate work with great precision. He never went wrong with his estimation. I miss him.
He didnt expect that he would survive when they were attacked,he said. I thought I too would succumb to my injury like my bosses, Jadhav said, adding,Had I not acted dead, they would have killed me too. Jadhav, though badly injured, feels Kasab should be tried lawfully. I have full faith in our judiciary, he said. Though he regrets not being able to save his friend and mentor Salaskar.
