WHILE shooting in Bhopal for Raajneeti, what Katrina Kaif most liked about the location was the fact that it had ample vacant spots around the set where the cast and crew could play cricket. For filmmaker Prakash Jha,however, the city offered other benefits scenic locations,hassle-free permissions and friendly citizens. Currently in Bhopal to shoot for Satyagraha, this is Jhas fourth outing there after Raajneeti,Aarakshan and Chakravyuh. For Raajneeti,I wanted a place where I could have an uninterrupted long schedule. Besides,Bhopal has an urban and rustic feel to it,which acts as settings for a number of scenarios, says Jha.
After Jha explored Bhopal as a shooting venue, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia and Rahul Mitra have opted to shoot their next production,Revolver Rani with Kangna Ranaut in lead, here. The location is decided on the basis of the story. With many Indian cities now opening up to Bollywood shoots, its easy to move out of studios, says Jha. Shooting also becomes a source of revenue for these places.
With films moving out of urban centres,tier-II cities have become a viable option as shooting locations. Much like Bhopal and Lucknow,Uttar Pradesh too has emerged as an option. The city is known for its old-world charm, language and culture, which filmmakers like to explore.
Habib Faisal, who shot Ishaqzaade there, said in an earlier interview,Lucknow played a character in the film. I needed to show the dichotomy of the protagonists, one Hindu and the other Muslim, and I couldnt have achieved that in a studio setting. Currently,Abhishek Chaubeys Dedh Ishqiya with Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Naseeruddin Shah, and Sonakshi Sinha-Saif Ali Khan starrer Bullet Raja are being shot in Lucknow.
While Wai was always popular with filmmakers, this picturesque town is now abuzz with Prabhudhevas Rambo Rajkumar,Rohit Shettys Chennai Express, and Anubhav Sinhas Gulaab Gang, which are being shot there. Prabhudheva states,We are over the obsession of showing the elite urban individuals as protagonists. The industry is reaching out to various parts of India. Abhinav Kashyap, who shot his directorial debut Dabangg,in Wai,says,Wai is also preferred because of its proximity to Mumbai.
