Locals around the high-security Arthur Road Jail that houses lone arrested 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab can breath a little easy now.
The heavy deployment of security personnel outside the prison has been slightly relaxed following the recent sentencing of Kasab to death. Stringent checks on residents, who were issued identity cards and were regularly frisked, have also been relaxed.
Though Kasab continues to be lodged in the solitary cell adjoining the special sessions court, the traffic and human movement along the Sane Guruji Marg is smoother now.
Vehicular traffic is smooth now but still minor checks like nakabandi on both sides of the road – Saat Rasta and near Chinchpokli – are on. Since Kasab is still lodged at Arthur Road Jail,we cannot totally relax the security cover as the threat still looms over our head, senior police inspector Vasant Tajne from N M Joshi Marg police station said.
During the 26/11 trial, only one-way movement of vehicles was allowed. Before Kasab was shifted to the prison in February 2008,the police had raised several watch towers where policemen were deployed round the clock.
The police collected personal details of each of the local residents and issued them identity cards.
Local businessmen had claimed that they were suffering losses due to heavy security and move the Bombay High Court seeking relaxation in the security cover.
