Seat-sharing will be on elective merit: Congress

Nana Patole’s statement comes on the background of a recent exchange of words between the three parties of the MVA — Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress.

Amid reports of disagreement in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Monday said that each party will get the seats based on its elective merit.

“Each party will undertake an exercise to analyse which seats can be contested by that respective party. There is nothing wrong in it. But ultimately the elective merit will be important and that many seats will be contested by the party,” said Patole.

Patole’s statement comes on the background of a recent exchange of words between the three parties of the MVA — Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress.

Patole said that even the Congress party has formed committees to analyse the situation and decision will be taken after considering all the aspects. “The unnecessary discussion that has been going on will stop only after the decision on seat-sharing. Maharashtra has always been the stronghold of the Congress,” he said, adding that the Congress’ position is very clear and the party wants to defeat the BJP, which has disrespected the idols of the state and the Constitution.

Last week, Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said that the Shiv Sena had won 18 seats in Maharashtra in the 2019 general elections and there is no question of any other party contesting on those seats. “NCP won four and Congress won one. There is no question of exchanging those seats as well,” he had said.

Raut’s statement comes on the background of NCP’s preparations of analysing ground reality on seats where it stood second in the 2019 polls. The NCP was in direct contest with the Sena on 12 seats then.

Leader of Opposition and NCP MLA Ajit Pawar had said that as decided earlier, a committee of two leaders, each from every party, will be formed to decide on the seat-sharing formula. “Once they decide, it will be presented in front of the leadership of the each party for their approval and after they sanction it, we will go ahead,” Pawar had said.
