Police probing an alleged rape of a 45-year-old West Bengal woman in Dadar Monday are facing a language hurdle as the victim speaks and understands only Bengali and is also unable to identify the scene of crime because of lack of knowledge of the city.
The woman has claimed an unidentified man lured her to a house in Dadar with the promise of employment and forced himself on her.
Government Railway Police (GRP) said the woman was found crying outside Dadar railway station by hawkers late Monday evening. Asked what was wrong, she told them something in Bengali they did not understand.
The hawkers brought the matter to the attention of Dilawar Mandal,a senior section engineer with Central Railway who was passing by and who understands Bengali.
The woman told Mandal she was raped.
The woman said she had an argument with her husband and left home in West Bengal. She reached Dadar Monday morning. She was sitting near a temple outside Dadar station when a man struck a conversation with her in Bengali. She told him she needed a job and a place to stay. He promised both and went away,to return after 10 minutes with another man. All three then got into a taxi and drove towards Parel, said a Dadar GRP officer.
After around a 20-minute drive, the men got out of the taxi. While the Bengali-speaking man stayed behind, his friend allegedly took the woman to a house in a slum where three other men and women were present. One of the women allegedly asked her to freshen up in a bathroom. A little later, the man who brought her to the house entered the bathroom and allegedly forced himself on her.
He then allegedly took her back to Dadar station and abandoned her.
We took her to Parel but she could not pinpoint the place where she was allegedly raped. We have transferred the case to Matunga police in whose jurisdiction the crime occurred, said inspector Nitin Bobde of Dadar GRP.
