Two constables attached to the crime detection department of the Borivali railway police were arrested by the Mumbai Unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Sunday for allegedly demanding bribe. The accused Nilesh Devrukhar and Sukhdev Shegar were allegedly caught while they accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a complainant.
The complainant runs a catering business. He had purchased some jewellery from a person identified as Raju Patil,who was wanted in a theft case. After Patil was arrested,Borivali railway police learnt that Patil had sold the jewellery. According to the complainant,he did not know they were robbed goods when he bought it, said an ACB officer.
The constables then called the complainant to the police station and allegedly told him that he was in trouble for buying the stolen jewellery. Both of them demanded Rs 30,000 to settle the matter. After negotiation,the complainant paid them Rs 15,000, the officer said. Devrukar and Shegar then demanded Rs 10,000 more. Tired of their demands,the complainant approached the police, the officer added. We laid a trap and arrested them red-handed, the officer said.
