Read this to read better

The Eternal Library helps individuals, offices and businesses set up,manage and run reading spaces

Avid readers Ahalya Naidu (31) and Meethil Momaya (33) want to be the link between you and your dream bookshelf.

They started The Eternal Library (TEL) in January 2013,which helps individuals, offices and businesses set up,manage and run reading spaces.

“We set up libraries of all shapes and sizes in homes, hospitals, offices, housing societies and hotels. We also revive existing libraries. We believe readers are the happiest when a library is within reach. Even better when the library is customised. Words wield a great power and by setting up a space, small or big,you ensure reading stays eternal,” said Naidu.

TEL services include generating suggested reading lists, cataloguing books, replenishing stock and sending regular updates.

Naidu and Momaya understand reading preferences and send a list of recommendations to clients. Once the list is approved, they procure, catalogue and ship books. They charge 20-25 per cent of annual library budgets.

“We believe a library should be always accessible, have a wide selection of books and is regularly updated and well-maintained,” Naidu said.

TEL is helping two individuals in Mumbai and creating a library for a guest house in Rajasthan. They are in talks with two corporates, two housing societies and two clubs.

“We have written to several housing societies, corporates and hostels run by trusts. The concept of building a library in a residential building or an office is new and explaining it to people is a challenge,” Naidu said.

While Naidu has been editing manuscripts for the past seven years,Momaya is a wildlife photographer.

Friends would frequently ask them to recommend books. “A time came when we started thinking about setting up a library. But funds and space were constraints. We then decided to look at the next best option of going to the reader and TEL was born. We still want to create our own library one day,” said Naidu.

So what’s an ideal library? “One that grows with me and creates a sense of community in any space,” she said.
