A portion of the Aysha building in Bhendi Bazaar partially collapsed along with the staircase on Monday night due to heavy rains. Three families residing in the building were evacuated as they managed to escape unhurt, as per civic officials.
The Aysha building is one of the 250 dilapidated buildings part of the 16.5-acre Bhendi Bazaar cluster redevelopment scheme, currently under way.
Officials of Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), executing the project, said that the residents of the cessed structure had not moved into transit homes after Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) declared it unsafe in 2012. “We have now moved the 13 tenantsts residing in the building to a transit accommodation in Bhendi Bazaar itself,” a civic official said.
This is the second incident in Bhendi Bazaar that has collapsed in the last 20 days. In July, a portion of Galabhai Chawl in Bhendi Bazaar collapsed during a spell of heavy rain. Three families, residing inside the structure had escaped unhurt.
“We have been trying to evacuate residents but have faced difficulty in convincing a few,” said a civic official from the C ward which includes Bhendi Bazaar.
In another incident, a 13-year-old boy was injured after some portions of a building collapsed in the Gautam Nagar area in Lokhande Marg in Deonar at around 1.30 am on Tuesday.
The boy, Ajinkya Arvind Jadhav who suffered minor injuries has been admitted to the Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi.
