A month after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation wrote to the Mumbai Port Trust, asking it to expedite the process of formally allocating land to the BMC at Reay Road for the proposed storm water pumping station at the Britannia Outfall, the MbPT Board has finally given its in principle approval for the same. Construction on the fifth pumping station under the vital BRIMSTOWAD (Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drainage) project is now set to begin, after a delay of two years.
Though the Port Trust authorities had earlier given an informal approval to the BMC for allocation of a plot of land measuring 2,200 square metres on which the pumping station is set to come up,the agency had subsequently deferred the decision to allocate the land at least six times since July 2009. The decision was finally approved by the Board on January 25. The pumping station, once completed, will eliminate flooding in areas that see major waterlogging during the monsoon such as Nana Chowk in Grant Road,Dr BA Road in Byculla and NM Joshi Road in Lower Parel.
An engineer from the civil engineering department of the Port Trust confirmed that the approval has been given. The process got delayed since our board wanted to study all the implications of the project.
A senior official in the BMCs storm water drainage department said the BMC can start work on the pumping station once a written approval is received from the MbPT. We want to make this pumping station operational before the monsoon of 2012. We ideally needed a minimum of two years to complete the work. But we will expedite the work now and finish it before the monsoons of next year, said the official.
After the successful functioning of pumping stations under the first phase of the project at Haji Ali and Irla Nullah, the BMC expects to make the other two at Love Grove in Worli and Cleveland Bunder operational before next monsoons. Phase II involves pumps at Britannia Outfall,Gazdarbund in Santacruz,Mogra Nullah in Andheri and Mahul Creek in Chembur.
