A month after jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh was looted from a Ghatkopar shop,investigators have cracked the case. On March 10,four men,armed with choppers,gun and iron rods,broke into BB Jewellers and looted ornaments.
When watchman Ram Bhanudas Ravan (60),employed with a bank nearby,and police constables Vikas Rajapure (41) and Santosh Gaikwad (34) tried to stop them,the robbers fired at them injuring all three. Rajapure suffered a fracture in the left hand and was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital. Ravan,who was seriously injured,was admitted to KEM hospital.
The police studied the modus operandi employed in the house break-ins that took place around the time,Sanjay Shintre,deputy commissioner of police (zone VII) said.
They got to know of a robbery in Vile Parle that took place three days before the Ghatkopar theft. CCTV images showed that the same gang was behind the two robberies.
After studying the tapes we concluded that both the robberies were committed by the same gang, said Shintre.
The police nabbed the suspects after questioning one Anna Harijan who was arrested for a robbery bid in Chembur.
We showed him the tapes. Harijan confirmed that both the robberies were committed by the same gang. He also told us that three of the four robbers had fled the city fearing encounter and only Kashinath Devraj (30) had not fled as his son was unwell, added Shnitre.
The police arrested Devraj. They others identified as Shankar Kerela (24),Kishna (34) and Ram (40).
