The JJ Marg police appear to be on the verge of a breakthrough in the murder of an elderly woman and her nephew at their residence in the Bhendi Bazaar area. The police suspect a property dispute was behind the murders and have reportedly detained some relatives of the victims.
On Monday, advocates Fehmida Shaikh, aged around 60,and her nephew Arsh Ahmad Shaikh (27) were found dead in a house in Pathanwadi after their neighbours complained to the police about a foul smell emanating from the house. Post-mortem reports revealed that the two victims were killed with a sharp weapon as early as last Friday.
Police sources revealed that among those detained were Fehmidas brother, allegedly the prime suspect in the case. Although Ravi Thakur,Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dongri division),said the police have not arrested anybody yet and were still conducting inquiries, sources in the police station said Fehmidas brother has been detained and is being grilled.
According to sources,Fehmida was due to go on a Haj pilgrimage in a few days and had called her brother to take care of the house in her absence. Fehmida had told her brother that she would pay him Rs 200 per day if he came to Mumbai. A few days ago,Fehmidas brother, who has a workshop manufacturing scissors, came to the city. He had recently asked Fehmida to sell her property and give him a share. However, the victim had told him that she had given her entire property to her nephew, whom she had adopted. We suspect this might be the reason behind the dispute between the siblings, said an officer from JJ Marg police station on condition of anonymity.
We have not arrested anybody as of now. However,we are very close to cracking the case, said Khanderao Patil,Senior Police Inspector of JJ Marg police station.
