Party No More

The setup was a hospital and all eyes were on Govinda. He walked around in his brown-blue striped shirt, followed by his entourage of security,make-up man and film crew. It was time to get the next shot ready. Govinda and his entourage finally get a break and the actor sips some chai with us.

He’s currently shooting for Chai Garam, where he stars opposite Celina Jaitley and Esha Deol. Govinda doesn’t believe that he’s too old to act opposite the young heroines. “People have told me that I’m not looking bad,so that means I’m looking good. So I guess it’s ok then,” he smiles and makes me do the same.

Ever since he decided to quit politics,Govinda’s schedules have been completely filled with shoots. He’s back in full form and has over six films to be released soon. “It’s very refreshing for me to come back to cinema,” he says. Since most of the films have him playing Romeo to pretty heroines,he’s a content man. “Most of the time I just keep looking at the beautiful heroines,” he jokes. “After I came back from the political stint, every face looks so beautiful here. Not that political people are ugly but there is so much ugliness in the society,” adds the actor on a slightly serious note.

But does he miss being a politician? “Nobody can miss politics. Even if you are not involved in politics,it’s around you in some way or the other. Always,” he quips.

Since his name is synonymous with a vivid wardrobe,it’s a little odd to see his attire suddenly toned down. “For the last few years,I had to wear only white kurtas all the time. It was quite boring and I was always worried about getting my clothes stained,” he explains. “Now I’m back to colour. I’m working with such good directors like Priyadarshan and David Dhawan, who have now given me a new good dressing style that goes with their films. When I came back to the industry,I realised that people don’t dress the way they used to.”

About his next release,David Dhawan’s Do Knot Disturb,Govinda is excited. “The film is so much fun. It’s the kind that will make you feel good about yourself when you walk out of the cinema. ‘Do Not Disturb’ is a sign put outside rooms when people want their privacy, especially after marriage. The film all about getting disturbed during romance,” he says, with a laugh. So when was the last time that he got disturbed? “I’m a very family-oriented person and when I’m not working I like to be left alone to spend time with them. I hate it when people disturb me then and it always happens.”

After that he has another string of releases,Naughty @ 40,Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai,Run Bhola Run,Raavan. Most of them are what he’s known for: comedy. “Comedies are hard work. My main criterion is that the film should be entertaining, that’s all. I do want to try something new though. I think I should try some action. But I don’t want to leave my turf of comedy so I want to do a film that combines action with comedy,” he reveals.
