Pandit for MCA polls

Former India wicket-keeper Chandrakant Pandit is set to join the list of cricketers who will contest against International Cricket Council president Sharad Pawar's group in the upcoming Mumbai Cricket Association elections to be held on July 15.

Former India wicket-keeper Chandrakant Pandit is set to join the list of cricketers who will contest against International Cricket Council president Sharad Pawar’s group in the upcoming Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) elections to be held on July 15.

If sources in the MCA are to be believed,Pandit will contest for one of the two joint-secretary posts. Pandit is the director of the MCA’s indoor academy and has also been a former Mumbai coach. He played five Tests,36 One-day Internationals and 138 first-class matches.

Since former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar announced that he would contest for the president’s post there has been talk of ex-cricketers throwing the hat into the ring. Pawar has been president for eight years.

“Pandit will be contesting the election. He is keen on the secretary’s post,” a source close to the former wicket-keeper batsman said. Pandit was unavailable for comment on Thursday. Among other players tipped to participate in the elections are Balwinder Singh Sandhu,Karsan Ghavri and Pravin Amre.

A well-known cricketer who is ready to throw his hat into the ring said: “This is the right time cricketers to contest in the MCA elections. There are many cricketers in Mumbai who want to do something for the game. There is no point sitting at home and cursing the current system when there is the option of entering the MCA and trying to make a change.”
