‘Overworked’ fireman attacks senior

Long working hours and stress seem to have taken a toll on firemen. On Saturday,a 45-year-old fireman was booked for attempt to murder after he allegedly attacked his senior over long working hours.

Long working hours and stress seem to have taken a toll on firemen. On Saturday,a 45-year-old fireman was booked for attempt to murder after he allegedly attacked his senior over long working hours.

Senior fireman Mangesh Vasudeo Dhicholkar,57,had reported for his night shift on Saturday when Liyakat Ali Shaukat Ali Mokashi, who was allegedly irked over being overworked, struck his head with a sharp object. The MIDC police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Mokashi but are yet to arrest him.

“I am clueless why Mokashi assaulted me as I didn’t even interact with him after stepping in for my duty on Saturday. Eight fire engines and four water tankers were sent to control the fire at Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi’s bungalow in Juhu on Saturday night and the entire fire station was abuzz with activity. As soon as I arrived for my shift at 11 pm,I got engrossed in work and suddenly Mokashi approached me angrily,” said Dhicholkar.

Dhicholkar has served in the fire brigade for over three decades and is responsible for assigning duties to the firemen.

“When I looked up at him,he muttered something about his unwillingness to work on the shift. I asked him to get back to work and the next thing I realise was blood trickling down my face. I looked up and saw Mokashi with a sickle and then all I remember was being taken to the hospital,” he added.

Dhicholkar was rushed to Cooper Hospital and then shifted to KEM Hospital in Parel. With a bandage on the left side of his forehead and a swollen eye,the elderly fireman said,“I think Mokashi was drunk and also irritated with the senior fireman who was in charge of the shift before me. I feel that the attack wasn’t intentional but was committed out of frustration.”

MIDC police officials refused to comment on the investigation but confirmed that a case of attempt to murder was registered against Mokashi. “After registering the complaint,we learnt that after attacking Dhicholkar,Mokashi had reportedly left for home. But when our team went to his home,he was not there,” said a police official.
