Three weeks after a container ship collided with a bulk carrier off Mumbai coast and caused an oil spill in the region, environmentalists said it would take two-four months for a partial clean-up.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has been conducting a bio-remediation process with oilzapper microbial bacteria along the Alibaug shores since last weekend and plans to continue it at Navy Nagar,Colaba, this weekend. Dr Banwari Lal of the institute said,The soil at Colaba beach is highly contaminated due to the spill. Our team will use at least 1,500 kg of the oilzapper microbes to degrade the oil in patches of soil spread over a distance of 500 metres, compared to the 1,000 kg used for a distance of 1.2 km in Alibaug.
BNHS assistant director Deepak Apte said its preliminary report on the situation would be ready by the end of November. Without adequate analysing,it is useless to draw conclusions as the raw data that have been coming through in the past three weeks can be misleading.
Apte said attempting any clean-up operation now could potentially do more harm. The soil is very soft, and heavy machinery,or even just people walking around, could push the oil down into the soil instead of letting it to be washed away by the sea.
He said the preliminary report would contain possible solutions to begin restoring the affected regions, but more thorough assessments would be ongoing for up to two years.
