With the filing of nomination papers for the civic polls commencing Tuesday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation chief Bhushan Gagrani, who has been appointed as the district election officer, convened a meeting with representatives from political parties on Monday, directing the party workers to strictly adhere to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

The voting for BMC polls, which is slated for January 15, is poised to be conducted across 10,111 polling centres in the city. To oversee the operations, 23 returning officers–comprising officials from the district revenue department–have been tasked with charge of 23 wards which encompasses 227 electoral wards. While the civic chief leads the returning officers, nearly 100-150 civic staffers have been deployed under each returning officer.

Ahead of the nomination filing process commencing Tuesday, political representatives on Monday were issued details pertaining to returning officers as well as processes for nomination, scrutiny of applications, process of flagging objections, election expenditure among other processes.

During the course of the meeting, the civic chief said work is underway to ensure disciplined and impartial polls.

“We have issued guidelines to make sure that candidates do not make any errors during filing of nomination papers for elections. All the information must be submitted in a prescribed format and candidates should ensure that no details are missed owing to technical issues. If any section of the affidavit is left blank or filled with incorrect details, the nomination of the candidate will be cancelled,” said civic officials during the meeting. Pointing to the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, officials also called for the need for maintaining proper accounts of campaign expenditure and boosting of voter awareness. Come Tuesday, the contesting candidates can submit their nomination papers with their concerned returning officers.

The process of filing nomination forms is set to commence Tuesday and will continue until 4 pm on December 30, barring Christmas day and December 28 (Sunday). Following this, the scrutiny of nomination forms will commence on December 31, while the date for withdrawal of candidates has been set at January 2. With the election poised for January 15, the final list of contesting candidates will be issued January 3.
