New Dome for Music

A new, indoor venue for music events opens in Mumbai that can accommodate more than 2000 people.

While planning a gig by a popular international musician or band in Mumbai, one of the primary concerns — besides the entertainment tax — is the show’s venue. There are the usual night clubs and the MMRDA Grounds at Bandra Kurla Complex — which has,in the past, been host to some of the best-known musicians and bands in the world including Roger Waters,Iron Maiden and Pitbull and also to considerably large crowds. However, when American electro-house DJ Steve Aoki plays in the city on Sunday,he will inaugurate a new indoor venue, one that can accommodate more than 2000 people at a time.

Formerly a space called the Lalit Plaza in The Lalit Hotel,Andheri,it functioned as the usual conference/event room in a five-star hotel used for weddings and corporate events. Now,it’s being redone and has been renamed Pleasure Dome. It will continue to host events, with the focus on gigs. “The Lalit Plaza is an outdoor,hangar-like structure designed for exhibitions, large corporate functions and weddings,” says Keshav Suri, executive director,The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group. “So with the existing space — until we redo Sutra, our existing nightclub, and turn it into a Kitty Su (the nightclub in Delhi) — I decided to build a property called Kitty Su’s Pleasure Dome,” adds Suri.

After his gig at Kitty Su in Delhi on October 6,Aoki will travel to Mumbai on his first tour of the country. A DJ and producer,he founded his own record label,Dim Mak Records in 1996. In 2008 he released his debut mix album Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles and earlier this year, his first studio album,Wonderland. It was the latter — which features a number of guest musicians including LMFAO,Kid Cudi,Lil Jon and Travis Barker — that gave him the status he enjoys today. The 34-year-old musician has also remixed artistes and bands as varied as Jackson 5,Drake,Eminem,Mike Posner,The Killers,Lady Gaga and Lenny Kravitz.

While Aoki will perform in Delhi and Mumbai only — without his usual theatrics, which have,in the past, included crowd surfing in a dinghy and throwing cakes at the audience — musicians that are brought to India in the future by this same group might well have more venues to perform at.
