Mumbai recorded a sharp drop in minimum temperature on Monday as the city experienced light to moderate rainfall from Sunday evening, triggered by Cyclone Biparjoy.

India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius on Monday, while the Colaba observatory recorded 24 degrees Celsius, both of which are two degrees below normal level. On Sunday, the Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius while in Colaba it was 27 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the IMD issued a Yellow alert for light to medium rainfall in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts and on Monday officials said rain will continue to lash Mumbai for the next 24 hours.

“The Yellow alert has been issued as we are expecting some thunder activity. Because of Cyclone Biparjoy, we are expecting some pre-monsoon showers along with thunder and lightning,” said Sushma Nair, scientist, IMD Mumbai.

Officials added that the rainfall was triggered by Cyclone Biparjoy and should not be considered the official onset of monsoon over the city. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory on Monday recorded 4 mm of rainfall, while Colaba recorded 7 mm and Dahanu reported 10 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, Ratnagiri recorded 6 mm of rain and Kolhapur and Sangli reported 2 mm each. Officials said the intensity of rainfall was light in other districts, not enough to be measured.

According to IMD officials, monsoon has reached southern Maharashtra till the Ratnagiri region. “Conditions are favourable for its further advancement,” Nair added.
