Rain to slow down this week in Mumbai, come back during Ganesh Chaturthi: IMD

Light to moderate spell of rain likely in some pockets of Mumbai; water stock in all 7 lakes that supply water to Mumbai stood at 96.79 % Sunday morning.

After recording heavy rainfall last week, the intensity of rain in Mumbai is likely to recede this week and make a comeback during Ganesh Chaturthi, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials.

“This week, Mumbai may record less intense spells, however this will be for a short period. We are expecting formation of a low-pressure area between September 14 and 15 that may result in good rainfall after September 16. The next 3-4 days are going to be crucial and we will get a clear picture by the middle of this week,” Sushma Nair, scientist of IMD, Mumbai, told The Indian Express on Sunday.

Last week, Mumbai along with the neighbouring districts of Raigad, Palghar and Thane recorded heavy rainfall. The maximum city also recorded three-digit rainfall figures on September 7, the first time since July this year.

“The rain was due to east-west shear zone… there also was instability in the weather conditions that amalgamated with a cyclonic circulation, that resulted in rain over Mumbai. Now this phenomenon is no more, therefore, the city has recorded a break in rain,” Nair said.

Meanwhile, the IMD data states that in the past 24 hours, IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 2 millimetres of rain, while the Colaba observatory recorded 5 mm.

The water stock in all the seven lakes in Mumbai stood at 96.79 per cent on Sunday. At present, the Tulsi, Vehar, and Modak Sagar lakes are at 100 per cent capacity. The stock in Tansa stands at 99 per cent, followed by 98 per cent in Bhatsa and 97 per cent in middle Vaitarna and 88 per cent in Upper Vaitarna.
