Mumbai cops will now be paid by month-end

Officers also said that as a correctional measure in view of the festive season,police personnel have already been paid their salaries for August on Thursday. They had received their salaries for July only on August 8. “This is a very serious and recurring problem,and one that needed to be taken seriously by the police administration. There were regular delays of a week or more in payments of salaries. Constables and junior officers were really feeling the pinch. These delays did not affect senior officers or IPS officers,but made a huge difference to the lower rungs who had to struggle to cope with the delays in payment,” said a senior Mumbai Police officer.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik said corrective measures had been taken to tackle the issue. “We’re aware of the problem and strict instructions have now been issued to ensure that salaries are paid at the end of every month,” he said.A special paragraph added to the police notice this month reads: “The Commissioner of Police deeply regrets that the pay of the force has not been disbursed for the month of July 2011 till now. Getting salary on time is the basic right of every employee,and no justification whatsoever can alter this position. Except for the month of April when the salary is delayed for a few days,we will ensure that the salary is paid at the end of the month from now onwards.”

A regular review to examine any difficulties in disbursal of salaries will be conducted on the 24th of each month.
