Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) vice-chairman Sanjeev Jaiswal said that MHADA’s Mumbai board will likely conduct a lottery for 2,000 houses by the end of this year.
MHADA is a state government run agency responsible for providing houses at affordable rates.
Jaiswal added that MHADA aimed to provide 3,000 to 4,000 houses via lottery schemes to fulfill housing dreams of people. He was speaking at the Konkan board housing lottery draw which was held in Thane on Saturday.
Last year, the Mumbai Board held a lottery for 4,000 houses in August and had received a total of 1.19 lakh applications. The demand for MHADA lottery houses is significant considering the number of applications it receives every time, especially for houses in Mumbai.
The dreams of 5,311 families to become house owners was fulfilled through the Konkan Board lottery on Saturday. The lottery saw 25,078 applicants. Jaiswal stated that the entire process, from allotment letters to house registrations, was completely online.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was present at the lottery draw, declared the names of some winners as he emphasised on the timely completion of MHADA projects.
Shinde suggested MHADA officials impose fines on contractors for causing delays in the housing project works and reward those who finished projects on time so as to maintain buyers’ interests. He said several rules were recently changed to expedite the MHADA lottery process.
Housing Minister Atul Save assured MHADA was working on a plan to build and allocate houses promptly, eliminating long waits. He added MHADA aims to provide one lakh houses from different boards every year.
Among the winners of Saturday’s draw was Ajay Kumar Tiwari, an Indian Navy employee who had been applying for MHADA lotteries for the past decade and finally won a house in Thane this time.
