MU to form two new panels to check fee hike proposals

Mumbai University has now decided to form two new fee regulatory committees to scrutinise individual proposals to hike fees by colleges.

Nearly a year after a committee submitted its recommendation for revising the fee structure for undergraduate and post graduate courses,Mumbai University has now decided to form two new fee regulatory committees to scrutinise individual proposals to hike fees by colleges. A decision to this effect was taken at the management council meeting Thursday.

The university had formed a committee in 2012,under the chairmanship of its former Pro Vice-Chancellor A P Pradhan,to review the fee structure of affiliated colleges. The committee’s report was tabled for discussion at the management council meeting on Thursday.

Accordingly, the management council has decided to form two new Shikshan Shulka Samitis (fee regulatory committees). The committees will include principals, teachers, office bearers from the electoral constituency, representative of college management,a chartered accountant and a representative from the university. While one committee will be headed by current Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university, the other will be headed by the director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD).

According to the Pradhan committee recommendation, basic infrastructure and teaching facilities, human resources and financial transactions of the colleges, among others, will be taken into consideration before increasing the fees. Each college will have to submit a proposal to the two committees for increasing their fee structure.

According to a statement issued by the university, there will, however,be no fee increase for the current semester. Any hike for the next semester will be implemented as per the directions of the two committees,it says. Before this the university had increased the fees in 2009 and 2003.
