A 26-year-old Maharashtra Security Force official, who reportedly caught a 24-year-old woman and her husband as they tried to flee after stealing from passengers, was severely injured when the couple allegedly stabbed him for intervening. The Thane GRP has filed a case of attempted murder and arrested the couple.

According to police officials, the injured personnel, identified as Aniket Kadam, was on patrolling duty on platform number 9 and 10 at Thane railway station.

In his statement to the police, Kadam said, “At around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday, while I was patrolling the platform, a local train arrived, and suddenly a female passenger raised an alarm. As people around me alerted me, I saw a woman escaping after stealing from someone, so I chased her and caught her.”

While the personnel were taking her to the railway police station, her husband approached Kadam and began insisting that he let her go.

Senior Police Inspector Archana Dusane of Thane GRP said, “As her husband was also part of the robbery, Kadam detained him too. While he was bringing them to the police station, the woman pulled a knife from her pocket and stabbed him.”

The woman’s husband then escaped from the spot. Kadam, who had sustained a deep wound in his waist, continued to hold the woman until backup arrived, and she was brought to the police station. The woman, identified as Jainab Memon, was arrested late on Thursday, while her husband, Zahir, was traced on Friday and later arrested.

The police said that Kadam was initially taken to the hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

“His statement was recorded after which a case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty), and 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS against the woman and her husband,” added Dusane.

“We have learned that the couple are history-sheeters as they have targeted several other passengers in the past. However, in this case, we could not book them under relevant sections of theft or robbery as the passenger did not lodge a complaint,” said an officer.
