Mother’s pride

NAB felicitates mothers of children with multiple disabilities

A unique function last month — held to honour mothers of children with multiple disabilities — laughter and tears in equal measure. In the words of Hemant Patil,a member of NGO National Association for the Blind (NAB),which organised the event,it was “divine happiness”.

The event was held at NAB’s rehabilitation centre at Dr E Moses Road in Mahalaxmi. The 60-year-old organisation imparts basic and vocational training to disabled persons. Training is given in different areas of work, from agriculture to information technology.

Explaining the purpose behind the initiative,Patil said,“The mother of a child with multiple disabilities is often castigated and abandoned by her family. She is accused of having ‘spoiled the family line’. At times,it even causes conflict with the husband, who may not support her. It is then especially important and valuable for the mother to receive such an honour which recognises her contribution in spite of the difficulties she faces. It reinforces her social standing and gives her a sense of pride.”

About 45 women were presented with a memento — a metal sculpture of a mother holding a baby. They also took part in games and competitions.

Usha Bal,a member of NAB who was felicitated at the event, said,“My family supported me and helped me to take care of my son. However,at events like these,I realise that several mothers are not as fortunate. It is often the case that a conventionally bright child belongs to the entire family, but a child with disabilities only has his or her mother. The function made us feel special.”

Members of the organisation volunteered to take care of some the children to enable the mothers to attend the programme.

Usha’s 28-year-old son Aditya is blind as well as autistic. She recalls,“Earlier,he could not stay away from his parents or grandparents for even a little while. Now,my son interacts with others and has even gone for camps organised by NAB. When we realised that it was not possible for him to pursue conventional education,we helped him get vocational training. It has been a big help.”
