(Express file photo by Deepak Joshi)With the southwest monsoon poised to enter Kerala on May 31, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Mumbai is likely to witness monsoon onset from June 10, which is in line with the typical date of monsoon arrival in the bay. However, the official date of onset is yet to be announced, with scientists maintaining that the date will be determined after monitoring developments in Kerala.
Earlier this week, the weather bureau had announced that the southwest monsoon had advanced into the country on Sunday. “Southwest Monsoon 2024 has advanced into some parts of Maldives & Comorin area and some parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and South Andaman Sea today, the 19th May, 2024,” the IMD had announced in a statement.
Having entered Andaman, Mumbai is now expected to witness the onset of monsoon between June 10 – 11, according to senior IMD officials.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai said, “Currently, the southwest monsoon has arrived in Andaman and On May 31, they are expected to come to Kerala. In line with this, as of now, the monsoons are expected to arrive in Mumbai between June 10 – 11. While there could be some difference by 3 – 4 days, currently, we are expecting the monsoon to arrive on schedule.”
“However, we will be announcing the actual date of monsoon onset in Mumbai later as it will be determined after monitoring the monsoon developments in Kerala at the end of this month,” he added.
For the record, the official date of monsoon in Mumbai is June 11. However, last year, the monsoon arrival had been delayed by nearly two weeks due to a combination of weather developments including Cyclone Biparjoy.
Even as the monsoon onset is slated for the second week of June, meteorologists and weather experts have indicated that the pre monsoon showers are likely to sweep the state starting from the end of May.
Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services told The Indian Express, “From the end of this month, pre monsoon activity is expected to start in Mumbai. In the first week of June, isolated pockets may receive light rain which will later intensify as the south-west monsoon ushers in.”
Meanwhile, Mumbai continued to swelter under hot and humid conditions on Thursday, with the maximum temperatures soaring to nearly 35 degrees Celsius in the city as well as the suburbs. According to IMD scientists, the high humidity levels are here to stay for the next two to three days at minimum.
