With advanced training machinery,a networking system for modernised policing, designated residential rooms for State Reserve Police Force and Quick Response Team personnel and specialised cells for those detained, monitored by a dozen CCTV cameras, the new RCF police station is being touted as the first of its kind.

The three-storey structure, hailed as a “model police station” for the next generation, was inaugurated by Home Minister R R Patil on Wednesday in the presence of Commissioner of Police D Sivanandhan,Additional CP (East) Ritesh Kumar and Deputy CP (Zone 6) Dilip Sawant.

The present police station is in the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers quarters in Chembur. The company provided one cares behind the police station at a lease of Rs 1 per year. Construction, started two years ago by the Maharashtra State Police Housing & Welfare, was funded by the Home Department.

“There have been 350 alerts since 26/11 which have kept us on our toes. The past two months have been hectic thanks to the Assembly sessions,IPL,Maharashtra Day and the railway motormen’s strike. It’s essential that a cop goes back to a humane workplace. A simulator worth Rs 2 crore that can train staff in various kinds of weapons like SLR,Insas,AK-47 has been installed,” said Sivanandhan.

A gym worth Rs 25 lakh has been installed,as well as a CCTV connection from the senior inspector’s cabin. “Similar police stations are coming up at Ghatkopar and RAK Marg,” he added.

Patil called it the best police station in the city. “The welfare of the force which looks after the security of the city is essential and modernising the force is a priority. This building’s specialised mechanisms for training are commendable.”

The new building will not only be the RCF police station but also serve as a regional training centre.

“All training activities of the Eastern Region will now be conducted here. A firing simulator has been installed and a 60-seat conference hall will also facilitate training programmes. Earlier,we would conduct any training programmes at the Naigaon police headquarters but there were always time, space and availability constraints. With the Mumbai police also keen that its constabulary be trained to conduct investigations,we will hold such programmes in the conference hall,” Kumar said.

A crime and criminal tracking network and systems (CCTNS) has been installed and the East will be the first region to have one, besides the Commissioner’s office in Crawford Market.

The CCTNS is Home Ministry project aimed at creating a comprehensive, efficient policing system at the police station level, using a nationwide network. Crime Branch officials will train the staff in the operation of CCTNS.

Besides machinery, the police station also boasts corporate-style infrastructure complete with spacious officer cabins, sturdy wooden furniture, ample of parking space,a touch screen monitor to give information to visitors as well as VIP waiting rooms.

It is the first police station to address the needs of the SRPF and QRT,who live in poor conditions. It gives space for relaxation after duty, beyond the cramped vans, with separate rooms on the upper floors.

From now,two SRPF platoons and one QRT platoon will be stationed permanently in the police station.
