MNS worker throws paver block at CCD outlet for not having Marathi nameplate, FIR lodged

The Mumbai police on Wednesday registered an FIR against five Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for allegedly throwing a paver block at a Café Coffee Day (CCD) outlet in Trombay because it did not have a nameplate in Marathi.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had said that from November 28, it would take action against shops that did not have a Marathi nameplate.

As per the FIR registered at the Trombay police station, the police had learnt that workers from MNS Shakha 144, including shakha pramukh Pawan Pawar, were to protest outside the Trombay CCD and accordingly, a police team was present at the spot.

Around 1 pm, Pawar and a few others reached the spot and started protesting against CCD for not having a nameplate in Marathi. The police tried to intervene, however, Pawar allegedly picked up a paver block lying nearby and threw it on the coffee outlet’s English nameplate. The nameplate was damaged and fell.

As per the FIR, the protestors fled the spot following which the police registered an FIR against five people in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Pawar, Madan Gadekar, Hemant Abhnave, Santosh Pawar and Ravindra Gawas.

The accused have been booked under charges of rioting and causing mischief leading to damage of an amount of Rs 50, in addition to sections of the Maharashtra Police Act. An officer said that they are looking for the accused and will arrest them soon.

The BMC had recently formed a team of officers from the shops and establishment department in each of its 24 wards. The officials have been going around taking action against shops and establishments not following the rules.
