Man kills wife, sets himself on fire in Dharavi

A preliminary probe revealed that the couple had regular fights over Dhuriya’s drinking habit.

A 25-year-old man from Dharavi allegedly killed his wife by setting her on fire using kerosene and later set himself on fire. The woman died at the hospital while undergoing treatment, while the accused is said to be in critical condition.

According to Dharavi police, the accused Anil Hiralal Dhuriya, a resident of Naiknagar, Dharavi, had a heated argument with his wife, Priya, 26, on Wednesday.

After some time, he allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire before setting himself on fire. Neighbours rushed them to Sion Hospital with severe burns. “The woman had sustained 100 per cent burns and died during the treatment. The accused husband sustained 90 per cent burns and remains critical,” said a police officer.

Police have registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Dhuriya. As Priya died during treatment, police would now add section 302 (murder) also to the case.
