The Pant Nagar police have arrested a 37-year-old iron supplier for allegedly transporting stolen iron rods.
The accused has been reportedly arrested seven times earlier at different police stations across the city where he has allegedly flaunted names of IPS officers and claimed to be their relative. The Pant Nagar police said he claimed to be a relative of Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) Ramrao Pawar.
Inspector Vilas Yadav said a truck loaded with iron was seized as part of a naka bandi near Vikroli traffic police station.
We asked the truck driver, Francis Motiyankar (37),to show the receipt of the iron he is going to supply but he failed to do so and called the truck owner,Anwar Mohammad Shaikh, said Yadav. Anwar reached on the spot but he too failed to show any proof related to the iron on the truck.
We then took the truck driver and owner Anwar to the police station. We learnt that Anwar had a weigh bridge in Deonar, where all the iron loaded in the truck was being taken for weight checking. Anwar said when the truck went for the weight checking,he with a help of an associate would rob the iron and sell it to builders in the city at rates cheaper than those in the market, Yadav said.
A police officer said when Anwar was brought to the police station he began claiming that he had close relations with many ACPs,DCPs and IPS officers.
