Man ‘elopes’ with minor,arrested

The suspect was also found to have stolen a gold chain and burgled a jewellery store,police said.

The Dadar police have arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly convinced a 13-year-old girl to elope with him and entered into a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage. The suspect was also found to have stolen a gold chain and burgled a jewellery store,police said.

Police said the victim,who stays with her parents in Dadar,went missing on November 25. Thakar was also missing and police registered a complaint of kidnapping against him and launched a search for him.

“While checking Thakar’s background,we came to know that he had sold a stolen gold chain a few days before he kidnapped the victim. Inquiries revealed his involvement in a burglary at Panchratna Jewellers in Worli Koliwada,from where jewellery worth Rs 32 lakh was stolen. A complaint was registered regarding this with Worli police,” said an officer.

After questioning his friends and relatives,the police tracked Thakar to Virar. However,he had fled.

The police then made further inquiries and found out that the duo were in Dhankavdi in Pune.

On November 30 a police team arrested Thakar from Pune and rescued the girl.

“Further interrogation confirmed his involvement in the theft as well as the burglary. We have recovered jewellery worth Rs 25.80 lakh from his house as well as from the residence of his friend Vaibhav Panvalkar,who has been arrested. Thakar’s brother Sagar,who helped him break into the jewellery store has also been arrested,” the officer added.
